A Learning Environment That Reflects a Culture of Success
By Mike Roemer, Principal, Reagan High School, Milwaukee SD
A healthy educational environment should embody an inherent culture of success. At Reagan, recognized among the state’s most successful high schools for both student achievement and growth over time, we maximize the odds of success by providing a learning environment that accelerates results rather than hinders them. We believe our facility must reflect our learning culture, serving as a tangible expression of the high expectations and achievements we hold for every student. Inspiring examples of achievement appear throughout our campus, and by embedding images of triumph into daily life, we instill a deep-seated belief that goals are attainable and success is possible for all students. As visitors approach our school, they immediately see that the entire campus is student-centric. In alignment with the internationally acclaimed INSIDE OUT project, we have mounted 84 massive photographs of staff and students on the building’s exterior to greet visitors and neighbors alike. This display rotates throughout the school year to showcase student artwork. Inside, large monitors broadcast current school events, motivational imagery, and quotes to encourage students. Video displays are updated monthly or adapted for special events such as open houses and conferences, recognizing vested stakeholders and creating an inclusive, celebratory atmosphere. Some monitors feature archival information highlighting school achievements, IB/ACT performance, staff awards, and contributions from community stakeholders. Within our entryway, college pennants line a corridor overhanging a massive map connecting the names of each year’s graduating seniors with the colleges they will attend. A thermometer chart tracks annual scholarship offers, which totaled $24.6 million in 2025. Other halls display poster-sized photographs of students exemplifying the IB Learner Profile. Semi-transparent colored prints of current students from diverse backgrounds adorn campus windows, showcasing our global-mindedness and pride in diversity. An entire wing serves as a dedicated gallery with 80 display cabinets highlighting student artwork. The recent $20M expansion project at Reagan, which included $5M in private funding, significantly enhances our ability to create a 21st-century learning environment that reflects a culture of success. The upgraded science and athletic facilities provide spaces that inspire curiosity, collaboration, and excellence. Students are immersed in an environment that celebrates achievement and engagement: Massive murals in the gym, Radio Reagan, and the Fitness Center—features found at only a handful of schools nationwide —elevate the student experience; the Outdoor Classroom prominently displays student artwork; a 20’ by 10’ cutout of the State of Wisconsin highlights eleven images of our student athletes; in the main lobby, a 24/7 rotating video showcases students’ achievements in academics, athletics, and the arts on a display the size of a movie theater screen. The learning environment also includes cutting-edge educational spaces such as an aquaponics lab and a state-of-the-art Antamoge table with integrated video displays, offering interactive, hands-on learning experiences that connect theory to practice. These thoughtfully designed spaces not only reflect our commitment to excellence but actively support a culture of success, making our facilities an integral part of the learning environment where students are motivated to explore, achieve, and grow.
