Monitoring The Future: Tracking Teen Risk BehaviorsMonitoring the Future is the census of teen risk behavior in the United States. It is a long-standing, nationally representative, and well-respected study conducted by the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the National Institutes of Health. The study is endorsed by NASSP, NAESP, National PTA, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the National Association of School Nurses, and several other national organizations. Our students’ behaviors and attitudes are important factors in their preparation for future leadership and participation in society. Among their challenges are availability of alcohol, vaping mechanisms, marijuana, and other drugs that can impact their health and productivity. MTF monitors this “future” through a carefully constructed, self-administered survey, conducted with middle and high school students across the country. The survey focuses on use and perceived risks of alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. It also seeks information about the school environment, peer group influences, and future aspirations. MTF uses a random sampling process to identify potential schools who meet established criteria. MTF sends information and an invitation to the school, and the principal makes a decision about participation. MTF manages the parental consent process, the school sets the date and time for the activity, and MTF sends a proctor to the school to conduct the survey. What is the benefit of participating? First of all, there is no cost for participating. In fact, MTF covers all costs and provides participating schools with a stipend to be used to meet their needs. MTF staff manages parent permissions and logistics, so there is minimal effort needed from the school. MTF even sends a proctor to the school to conduct the survey. Following the survey, MTF sends a report to the school, comparing their results with those of the national sample. This information is helpful to alert the school to trends, emerging issues, and student attitudes. The data can be used to support school improvement efforts and provide a basis for productive discussions with students or staff. The information typically aligns with school goals and can support grant proposals or other funding requests. Monitoring The Future data informs a wide range of school policies, from health education to student support services. Sharing insights and actions taken based on MTF data in school communications can enhance trust and collaboration with parents, teachers, and the broader community. Monitoring The Future provides critical data to national leadership to strengthen research efforts and contribute to a better understanding of youth development. It utilizes direct student input in shaping policies on issues of importance to students themselves as well as the nation.
