Meet the Moment: The Power of Process-Based Learning

By Tom Sauve, Principal, Elmwood Middle/High School, Elmwood School District

As educational leaders, we know that every day brings new challenges—academic gaps, behavioral concerns, and shifting student needs. Success isn’t about reacting in the moment; it’s about being prepared for it. Meeting the moment requires a process-based mindset—one that ensures consistency, establishes clear expectations, and provides structured support. When an event happens, whether it’s a struggling student, a classroom disruption, or a school-wide challenge, we can meet it head-on and find success.

At the core of this mindset is a commitment to consistent instructional delivery across all grade levels. When students experience a familiar teaching approach year after year, they develop confidence in their learning journey. Teachers, too, benefit from a shared framework that fosters collaboration and reduces learning gaps. This alignment ensures that no matter what challenges arise, students receive high-quality instruction that supports their growth.

Equally critical is our focus on skill-based interventions at the middle and high school levels. By proactively identifying students who need extra support, we can intervene before gaps widen. Whether through small-group instruction or one-on-one support, these interventions allow us to meet students where they are and guide them toward success. With a process in place, we don’t just react to academic struggles—we anticipate and address them.

A strong behavioral process is also essential for fostering a positive school culture. Clear expectations, consistent reinforcement, and proactive support create an environment where students feel safe, respected, and engaged. When behavior expectations are understood school-wide, disruptions decrease, and learning time increases. A process-based approach to behavior management ensures that when challenges arise, we respond with consistency and purpose rather than uncertainty.

Ultimately, a process-based mindset allows us to navigate the unpredictable with confidence. By establishing and following clear systems—whether in instruction, intervention, or behavior—we create a foundation that supports students and staff in every situation. We don’t just react to challenges; we’re ready for them.

Consistently applying this approach has led to significant academic gains and overall growth at Elmwood School District. Since the 2018-19 school year, Elmwood has improved across all levels, as measured by the DPI Report Card—rising 16% in middle school, 12% in high school, and 14% district-wide. In 2018-19, our district ranked 296th in the state; by 2023-24, we had climbed to 39th—a testament to the power of a process-based mindset

Meeting the moment means being prepared for whatever comes next. With a structured, intentional approach to learning and school culture, we empower our students to thrive, no matter what challenges arise. Let’s embrace this mindset, strengthen our processes, and ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
