2022 National Principal of the Year, Beth Houf, On Embracing the School Leadership Journey

Presuming Competence in Our Students and Each Other 

As educators, it is our responsibility to ensure that we are always working to close gaps in our system both in achievement and in opportunity. Eliminating inequities both as individuals and as a collective school community is hard work and cannot be done in isolation. Supporting the Needs of Experience-base Licensed CTE Teachers 

School districts are hiring industry experts under Experience-Based Technical and Vocational Education Subject licenses at an increasing rate. In 2018-19, 213 experience-based licenses (EBL) were issued to 185 people, nearly double the number of license endorsements by all Wisconsin educator preparation programs for CTE teachers, including non-traditional route programs. Read more here.

Last May, researchers Sarah Guthery and Lauren Bailes published Building Experience and Retention: the Influence of Principal Tenure on Teacher Retention Rates, which found that principals hire significantly more teachers who persist after they have led their first school for five or more years when compared to their peers. Read more here.
