Critical Incident Response Training: April, May, and June 2023

When critical incidents or crisis events occur in a school, quick access to effective resources that minimize the traumatic impact on students and staff is essential.   That is the reason for Wisconsin’s Critical Incident Response Teams (CIRT).  Training is available for those interested in serving on a regional CIRT Team.  Read more here.

AWSA 2023 Election

The AWSA Board of Directors election will be held electronically from April 15-April 30, 2023. This year, Directors will be elected from Regions 1, 5, 6 and 9.  Members of each of these regions will be emailed a notification on April 15th with a link to an online ballot listing the candidate(s) for that region. As part of its succession planning, the Board has recruited candidates in each region. 

  • Region 1 (co-director): Deb Paradowski, Associate Principal, Arrowhead High School

  • Region 1 (co-director): Tiara Rogers, Director of K-12 Extended Learning & Educator Development, Waukesha

  • Region 5: Aaron Andres, Associate Principal, Sauk Prairie High School

  • Region 6: Amy Ashton, Principal, Lakeside Elementary, Oshkosh

  • Region 9: Dan Marien, Principal, Northland Pines Middle and High School

The Role of a Building Leader as the  “Supervisor” of Professional Staff

Principals and associate principals, as building leaders, are consistently involved in supporting and growing their professional staff, whether that be through the Educator Effectiveness process or more informal coaching/mentoring.  However, there are frequently instances when the principal or assistant principal must put on a different “hat” and become the “supervisor” of a professional employee and play an entirely different role from that of professional development.  Read more here.

Adolescent Literacy Series: Inference (Article 7 of 8)

Inference can be a challenging foundational skill. Telling students to “read between the lines” is nebulous at best or asking students to make an “educated guess” regarding a conclusion can also be perplexing. In truth, an inference is the processing of adding evidence to reach a conclusion based on what we think we already know. But let’s face it, that definition can cause confusion as well. Read more here.
