Reduce the Number of Children Not in School

by Darrell Rud, President, World Education Forum in the United States

It is my hope that you are having your most successful year yet in leading the schools, districts, and entire learning communities in your beautiful state. My formal professional educator career spanned more than 4 decades so I "sort of" understand your increasingly complex and important roles and I applaud you for taking on these challenging opportunities for leadership.

I come to you at this time not to intentionally give you extra burdens but to provide you with some important information and an opportunity for advocacy and assisting in the finding and educating an additional estimated 29,629 Wisconsin children between the ages of 5-17!  This data, generated by the American Community Survey, represents the number of children in this age range who are not enrolled in any type of school in your state as of 2016 (the latest year surveyed)!

So what can you do with increasingly full plates?
  1. Assist your Executive Director Jim Lynch who volunteered to be our World Education Forum in the United States (WEF-US) Ambassador for your state;
  2. Check out our website and contribute to social media sites; (see information below about connecting);
  3. Share the information and encourage friends/colleagues to support WEFUSA;
  4. Become active in your state organization and other organizations that advocate for children;
  5. Share your message at meetings, with groups and friends;
  6. Talk with political leaders and share this information:
    1. Ask them to raise this question and insist on ways to reduce the number of children not in school
  7. Help us find some influential people who would:
    1. Write a testimonial in support of this mission;
    2. Donate funds so we can be more effective in our action;
  8. Share ideas that are working in your area.
The task seems immense but as the legendary "starfish story" goes perhaps you, while working with Jim and your colleagues, can save (find and educate) one student at a time!

THANKS for your service to the children of Wisconsin and our nation!
